Turtle Beach
Sunday May 29th. For North Shore Sunday we spent most of the day at Turtle Beach, appropriately named because there are a whole lot of giant sea turtles. They are giant because they sit in the sun all day at the beach eating the sea weed in the shallow waters. Sea turtles like to eat hair and have little control of their bodies when they are being pummeled by waves, making it quite difficult to stay six feet away from them.

After the beach we got lunch. Just a as we were finishing up Joey got off of work and met us to get shave ice at his favorite place, Aoki's. Joey was raised on the North Shore so he knows what he likes in shave ice. Aoki's is where we met Joey two and a half years ago.

Shave Ice With Friends
Friday May 20th - Sunday May 22nd. On Friday we had shave ice with David and Rachel! They were here for a wedding but made the time to have shave ice despite David claiming that he doesn't like sweet or cold treats. I think I remember the flavors, but please correct me if I'm wrong.
Strawberry with ???, raspberry, watermelon with peach, mango, cherry with green watermelon and mojito, ginger ale with peach
We spent a lazy North Shore Sunday on the beach. When we attempted to get shave ice the line was just far too long for the amount of time we had left so I opted for ice cream instead, this marking the first Sunday since Joe's birthday that I haven't had shave ice. After a quick work meeting we went over the the Hilton to go for a swim and try out a new camera.

Tuesday Beach Day
Tuesday May 17th. Today looked like a good day to go to the beach so after work we packed up some cameras and went. On the way, we got side tracked and spent some time playing on the cliffs and shooting some film at a beach park.
The sun is finally out and the water is turning turquoise. When we finally did make it to the beach, we saw a sea turtle playing in the waves.
This turtle is missing it's right front flipper. Naturally, I needed to know more about this. After an extensive search I've determined that this sea turtle lost it's flipper when it became entangled in fishing line. We named him Devo. There are at least three other sea turtles who are missing fins that swim in the waters off of Oahu and one of whom was attacked by a shark.
We have some friends that are in town for a wedding. Tonight we went to spend time with them. After getting a quick bite to eat we walked down to a bar but they wouldn't let me in. I had a valid drivers license and two student id's with photos. Two separate people scrutinized my id for about 10 minutes and had me sign my name on a piece of paper but ultimately denied my entrance. I am more than old enough to go into a bar and I feel like the guy at this bar was just trying to prove a point. I remained courteous, but he upset me. I just wanted to spend some time with old friends that I haven't had the chance to see in years. Dear power hungry man at Moose Mcgillicutty's, you put a bad spin on an otherwise great day. I hope that you spend too much time in the sun, get lots of wrinkles and look like you are in your late sixties by the time you turn thirty.

North Shore Drumday
Sunday May 15th. It has been a while, but we finally made it back to the North Shore. The first stop was at Matsumoto's for some shave ice. I do not recommend guava.

After milling around town we made a stop by a friends place where Joe played drums to an admiring audience of James Bonds.

When Mr. Bond had had enough, we went to Sharks Cove. The waves have decided that it is summer, and what was not too long ago a cove with 30 foot waves breaking on it is now a quiet tide pool.

A Cut And A Shave
Tuesday May 3rd to Sunday May 8th. It has been a stormy week.
Lightning as viewed from our front door
It all started on Monday with a drizzle and then an impressive light show. The rain continued through the week. At first, we tried to pretend it didn't exist by getting shave ice on a Tuesday.

Eating shave ice wasn't making the rain stop so we decided to enjoy it instead. On Friday we bundled up in sweaters and shoes to go out for pho. Bing Crosby sang favorite Christmas songs from the car speakers in the blistery 70 degree weather and we turned on the air conditioner just to make it that much more authentic. The weather was perfect for studying for finals, but not so much for the beach. Once again we didn't make it to the North Shore. We stayed in town, had shave ice and ran some errands.

When we got home I decided I had to have bangs again. I couldn't wait, it had to be right then. I watched a few videos online and remembered the advice that Amy gave me before I left; cut vertically, never horizontally.
Maybe a bad idea...
Once I got my bangs separated out and brushed forward I realized that there was no way I would be able to see well enough to cut them myself. I did my best to convince Joe to do it for me and in my desperation to convince him to wield the scissors I found myself saying "if you can drum then you can cut bangs." Apparently the two equate in my mind. I ended up bargaining a haircut for the promise of letting him take some pictures of the event. My bangs turned out even, straight and the perfect length.
Part of the deal.

Sunday May Day
Sunday May 1st. The Civil War has officially impeded on the amount of time I get to spend at the beach. Sunday is normally a beach day, but, with less than two weeks left in Joe's semester we did not have time to go. We did stick with the tradition of getting shave ice and went to the superb Shimazu Store. Just yesterday I was telling Joe about how I was finally starting to not feel like a tourist. I can nimbly order unequalled shave ice combinations, pronounce pretty close approximations of Hawaiian words, and nearly decipher Pidgin. In fact, we finally found the perfect shave ice combos and were able to delight in the best shave ice yet today. Naturally, while we were sitting outside of the shave ice store we started a conversation with a couple that immediately started with "where you from?" Joe replied, "we live here." which is the easiest answer to that question. "You have an urban New York look to you, like you aren't from here." the man retorted. Well, okay, I have been wearing desert boots exclusively for the last month or so and I guess we are a good 2,500 miles from the nearest desert, but come on, I have dirty hair and a sun dress. I certainly don't feel urban. Joe does carry around enough camera gear that a pack mule would be a practical addition to our home at this point, but he was wearing jeans and a t-shirt. I guess we'll have to start wearing board shorts and swim wear out like everybody else if we want to start to fit in.

Joe has affectionately dubbed his new camera Little Elvis. Lets go with LE for short. We had LE with us, so on the way home from Shimazu Store we stopped at a park to finish off a roll of 120 film. This meant I spent a decent amount of time in a tree today, as I did yesterday, only this time the tree wasn't located in a cemetery and it didn't rain. It's situations like this that make wearing desert boots practical even on a tropical island.
I spent some time here
while Joe was setting up some photos
so I took some photos of him
